Abominable Snow Babies

We are having the first snowstorm of 2025, but it is much less snow than predicted, even so girls are loving it.

Highland cows are well-insulated by their lanolin-coated hair, which keeps them warm even when covered in snow. The snow will eventually slide off their backs.

The girls have extra spunk In their hoofs when it is snowing.

The winters in NW Missouri are long and cold, and can bring on a little “cabin fever”but the girls help get us out in the cold crisp air to bring down that fever!

Clara and Belle love their evening feeding time and brushing. Clara is older than Belle by 4 months and acts like the big sister, pushing little sister around and hogging all the food. Neither of the girls are under fed, Belle just has to wait her turn.

It’s a bit tough to brush them when they are covered in snow.

Their 3 layers of hair keep their body heat in and the snow doesn’t melt.

The snow makes the farm look so peaceful, like a true Silent Night, Holy night, in a manger where the cattle are lowing.

"Cattle are lowing" means the cattle are making a deep, long sound, which is the normal sound cows make. The word "lowing" comes from the Old English word "lowen".

Belle’s lowing is a bit funny! It reminds me of an old child’s toy barn where when you opened the door it made a sick moo sound.
